Primitive Folk Art – Keepin’ it simple!
This is such a broad field of the creative spectrum I wasn’t sure exactly what it covered and which artists to include here! So I did a bit a research to find out what is meant by Primitive or Folk Art. The Folk Art Society of America desribes folk artists as ‘unique, self-taught-artists’. The Artcyclopedia filled in a few gaps for me...
“Folk Art- Folk Artists more closely related to craftsmen than they are to fine artists. Folk Art is characterized by a naive style.
Naïve art is created by untrained artists and is characterized by simplicity, strong use of pattern, unrefined colour and awkward perspective.
Primitivism is an artistic movement which originated as a reaction to the belief that 'modern' society was moving away from its traditional roots, losing touch with its true 'primitive' condition.”
So basically, if you create simplistic, unrefined, unique and somewhat awkward creations, this is YOUR category! Whew, now that we all know where we stand… lets show off some artists!
